Every year I discover a few new plants, and this year was no different!

In this issue:

  • List of New Plants for 2024
  • Herbs for Health
  • Leave Avesi a Google Review
  • FREE WEBINAR Monday Nov 4th

New Plants for 2024

This list has: 2 forbs (wildflowers), 1 sedge, 1 rush, 1 grass, & 1 shrub

While sedges, rushes, and grasses all may LOOK like grasses, they are actually 3 different kinds of plants. There is a popular saying in botanical ecology that is used to help differentiate them...

  • sedges have edges
  • rushes are round
  • grasses have joints when the cops are around

Herbs for Health

Earlier this year I smashed a fresh jar of homegrown herbs on my kitchen floor. There's nothing like an unfortunate mishap to highlight the value of something we can otherwise take for granted.

Many native plants can also be used to create herbal teas and tinctures. Native plants I've used before:

  • Monarda fistulosa (Wild Bergamot)
  • Echinacea purpurea (Purple Coneflower)
  • Agastache foeniculum (Annise Hyssop)
  • Solidago canadensis (Canada Goldenrod)
  • Symphyotrichum novae-angliae (New England Aster)
  • in addition to the typical kitchen herbs like basil, oregano, parsley, thyme, rosemary, sage, tarragon, mint, etc.

If you'd like to know any recipes or mixtures I've used, let me know, I'd be happy to share.

Share Your Experience

Hearing about someone else's experience is the first thing people look for when making a decision. Leaving a review could help someone feel confident about choosing rainscaping for their property. Please consider leaving AVESI a review... Thank you!

Free Webinar

I'll be giving a Free Webinar on Passive Rainwater Harvesting: Earthworks and Rain Gardens this coming Monday November 4th at 10am with Green Roofs for Healthy Cities. This will be a 30 minute broad-level overview of these concepts.

We completed a number of uniquely beautiful rainscaping projects this year and I share project insights and lessons on my Instagram page.

We're now booking projects for 2025. Autumn is the ideal time to start planning new projects. When spring comes around we'll be hitting the ground running with construction and various program-based consultations. If you are considering a 2025 project for your place now is a great time to reach out.

That's all for now,

Michael

Reader In this issue: The Foreword for The Modern Rain Garden II A Gardening Podcast I actually listen to Price changes for 2025 + February Price Freeze (I never do specials or discounts but what the heck) I reached out to someone I consider both a mentor and friend to see if he would write a foreword for the second edition of The Modern Rain Garden. After a gruelling couple months writing and editing this book (which should be ready soon!) reading the foreword has given me a renewed sense of...

Reader Hoping you and yours had a wonderful holiday season; all the best in 2025. Just before Christmas I joined the Hops & Hedges Podcast with Heather Jerrard to discuss the AVESI story so far... Listen on Spotify Listen on Apple Podcasts Lessons from 'The Serviceberry' 'The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World' by Robin Wall Kimmerer is a book likely to be on every nature lovers reading list at some point. I just finished it and really enjoyed it; but I feel it's...

Reader The following article is an adaptation of a piece I wrote for Landscape Ontario after I was asked to be part of a panel on Marketing Your Fusion Landscaping at the first Fusion Landscaping Conference earlier this month. Note: Fusion Landscaping is another word for Rainscaping - which is landscaping based around sustainable use of rainwater via earthworks and native plants. Lately I've been thinking about this less from my own perspective, and more from the perspective of my customers....
